In the beginning, India didn’t have a proper coach; instead, they had a manager who traveled with the team. In 1971, Keki Tarapore became the manager and is considered first Indian National Cricket team Coach. He did the job for a year, and then Hemu Adhikari took over.

Over the years, the coaching setup changed. Former cricketers, like PR Man Singh, managed the team when India won their first World Cup in 1983.

It wasn’t until 1992 that coaches started getting long-term contracts instead of short-term roles. Ajit Wadekar, Madan Lal, Sandeep Patil, Anshuman Gaekwad, and World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev were coaches in the 1990s.

In 2000, John Wright became India’s first foreign coach during a tough time for Indian cricket due to a match-fixing scandal. He worked well with captain Sourav Ganguly and helped develop players like Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Kaif, and Ashish Nehra.

Wright and Ganguly achieved great success, winning a Test series against Australia and reaching the 2003 Cricket World Cup final.

India had four foreign coaches, with John Wright having the longest stint (2000-2005). Greg Chappell followed, but his time was tough due to conflicts with skipper Sourav Ganguly.

India’s cricket reached new heights under Gary Kirsten, winning the 2011 World Cup and becoming No. 1 in Tests in 2010.

Duncan Fletcher, Anil Kumble, and Ravi Shastri were coaches before Shastri’s reappointment in 2017.

Ravi Shastri and Ashok Mankad are the only coaches with multiple stints. Shastri’s two terms (2015-16 & 2017-21) make him the longest-serving Indian coach. Shastri led India to the WTC final and victories in Australia and England but fell short of winning a world title.

After making India’s U-19 team win the World Cup in 2018, Dravid started looking after the National Cricket Academy, helping young players grow. But when Shastri left his coaching role in 2021, Dravid got the job, and now he’s coaching the team with the new captain, Rohit Sharma, leading the way.
